Garfield is originally from Trinidad and Tabago. His wife is from the Winston-Salem area, which is how he eventually ended up there- eventually. He bought the local Amco Trans Franchise in 2002 and moved to Winston-Salem.
He and his wife bought their first investment property in 2004 as a lease option. Since then he has bought many homes as rental properties which he manages himself. He also buys houses, fixes them up and sells them. He is the current VP of Triad Real Estate Investors Association. Garfield recommends this group to anyone interested in real estate investment. The help and learning is extremely important. They also buy and sell properties to each other on occasion.
I first met Garfield at the Winston-Salem RIA in 2013. I have always appreciated his candor and honesty.
During the current Covid 19 situation, Garfield has relied on selling houses to keep his rental business afloat. As tenants have lost jobs and have been unable to pay their rent,.He estimated being owed 10 months of back rent in November when we spoke. That morning, he was on the phone to try and help a tenant find a job. It is both generous and good business as finding good tenants is no small task. He tends to buy lower end homes and rents them to long term tenants. He says that he finds them more profitable than higher end homes. He also owns commercial property and is always looking for the next property to purchase.
