As Judy Garland once said in her iconic role as Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz, “There’s no place like home.”  That’s what Raleigh means to me and my wife, Ashley, and our children- sons Ira and Thomas and daughter Evan.  When I graduated from the North Carolina School of the Arts in Winston-Salem in 1970, I had the opportunity to go out to New York and Hollywood to pursue my passion for acting.  But instead, I came to Raleigh and have never once regretted my decision.  When I moved here, Raleigh gave me the feeling of revolution that I saw in the larger, more cosmopolitan cities, but also the intimacy and secure anchor of a small town.   The changes I have seen here have been truly indescribable.  It is a wonderful place to raise a family!

I have been working as the Founder/Artistic & Executive Director at Theatre in the Park since 1971.  We are located in Pullen Park and provide live community theatre entertainment for all guests.  Since I’ve been here in the Raleigh area, I have seen the artistic community grow from just 4 live theatre venues to over 80!  And the quality of the performances has increased exponentially due to the expectations of our audiences.  They want to see Broadway calibre shows, so that’s what we are here to give them!

Some advice that I would give to newcomers to the area– especially those interested in the arts- EXPLORE!  Talk to neighbors, visit websites, go on tours, become involved!  You will find things that you absolutely love and they will add depth and quality to your life.

Some of our favorite things to do in the Triangle (in addition to the wonderful theatres) are the live concerts that come through, the outdoor movies at the Art Museum, taking walks on the Greenway or at Umstead Park, and visiting some of the best restaurants you’ve ever experienced.  The Triangle has become a cornucopia of great food.  Our favorite restaurant is the 42nd St Oyster Bar & Grill.  It has become a staple for my family.

Whatever you need, Raleigh can provide!  Find the quiet areas and enjoy life!  That’s what it’s all about!
