My husband, Mike, and I started a family landscaping business, Lewey Landscaping & LawnCare, Inc., in 2001. Prior to owning our own business, I worked in banking and Mike worked for a development company as a grounds maintenance supervisor. Our plan was that Mike would run the outdoor operations, and I would manage everything else. We have had much success over the years and now have four crews providing full-service landscaping and lawn care. We offer both commercial and residential services tailored to the needs of each client. In fact, Mike personally inspects all potential properties to ensure that each client benefits from his experienced eye and is provided a clear estimate of the services to be provided.

It is very important to us to be involved in the community and give back. For example, Lewey Landscaping provides pro bono landscaping for the nonprofit Triangle Family Services. In addition, I serve as president of the Greater Raleigh chapter of the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO).

My top tip for success is to stay involved with your clients and keep a pulse on the operations of the business itself. Also, be involved in your community. People warm up to you better when you’re not just focused on running a business. I love going to events where I can network socially and from a business standpoint. I am a big fan of the arts and frequent the North Carolina Museum of Art, Broadway shows, and American Dance Festival. There are always great events in Downtown Raleigh and in Durham at the Durham Performing Arts Center. I also enjoy going to movies and eating out. My favorite restaurant is Margaux’s in North Raleigh.
