My young adult daughter, Joanna, spent several years in China as an English teacher, starting with elementary aged children and eventually teaching college students at a University in a large inner city. Part of her experience there was meeting a young Chinese man whose English name is Bob. Even though Bob and Joanna were from vastly different cultures and traditions they quickly found that they shared many common values and goals. They became quick friends, eventually falling in love and getting married there in China. About three years ago they chose to move here to North Carolina to begin their lives as a family. Eighteen months ago Joanna gave birth to my first grandchild, “Crusoe”. They currently live and rent in rural Johnston County and Bob, who was new to driving, spends about 2 hours per day commuting to and from his work near the NC State Univeristy campus. One of Bob and Joanna’s dreams (their American dream) has been to be one day own a small house near Bob’s employment and convenient to the cultural benefits found in Raleigh. They not only hoped for the dream of home ownership but desired to have a place of their own to raise little Crusoe.
